Race 2: Claiming $25,000 at 1 1/16 miles on the turf
7 – Upgrade
The one I want most is Upgrade (#7). I actually think he ran subtly well in his two starts for Steve Klesaris up at Saratoga. Upgrade has always preferred one turn at Belmont to two turns and I think he’s very dangerous on the drop in class. The price should be fair.
$20 Win 7
Race 3: Maiden Special Weight at one mile
5 – Chase the Love
I know I’m reaching a little bit, but I’ve been waiting to bet back Chase the Love (#5) in spot like this. This horse is extremely dirtied up. The fact of the matter is that his dirt routes have by and large been pretty good efforts. Especially two back on July 8th he disputed a blistering pace for the distance in a race that collapsed late and still hung on to midstretch. He’s just not a turf horse, but if he can get back to that last dirt race, he is very much a major player in this race and the price is going to be generous.
$10 Win/Place 5
$2 Exacta Key Box 5 with 2,6,8
$2 Trifecta 2,6,8 with 2,6,8 with 5
Race 8: Optional Claiming $62,500/N2X at 6 furlongs on the turf
7 – Barrel of Love
I’m most interested in Barrel of Love (#7) turning back to a sprint distance. This horse was once a very capable turf sprinter. Last time he was totally buried on the rail and never had a fair chance to run in the stretch, but prior to that his form was good while facing fields at least as tough as the one he meets today. He’ll need some pace to develop, but there does appear to be speed in here.
$15 Win 7
$4 Exacta Key Box 7 with 2,4,10
Race 9: Maiden Special Weight at one mile on the turf for NY-bred 2-year-old fillies
10 – Queens Tiara
11 – Sonic Surprise
I’m just not thrilled with the race that many of these are exiting on August 28th. I guess Sheyn Vi Di Levone looks mildly interesting, but I’m inclined to gravitate towards new faces.
The firster that I’m most interested in is Queens Tiara (#10). $85,000 is a lot to pay for a Hat Trick with little pedigree on the dam’s side, and this one actually looked pretty good working over dirt. I know Pletcher isn’t necessarily known for excelling with these types of firsters, but I think Queens Tiara might be okay.
At a bigger price, I’m also interested in Sonic Surprise (#11). Charlton Baker hasn’t had much success with his turf runners, but this filly is out of a dam who saw all of her success come racing on the turf. She should be a pretty big price.
