Race 3: Optional Claiming $80,000 at 1 1/16 miles on the turf for fillies and mares
1A – Ticking Katie
7 – Water Hole
I’m not in love with either of the favorites, Hellenistic and Dido. Hellenistic needs pace to run into, which she’s unlikely to get. Dido’s return effort looks okay on the surface, but the 3rd and 4th place finishers performed very poorly out of that race.
I prefer Ticking Katie (#1A), who performed admirably in some competitive handicaps towards the end of last year. She’s reportedly been training well in this country and Brian Lynch has decent numbers with this type. I’ll also use Water Hole (#7), who was basically eliminated at the first turn of the Distaff Mile, and has a right to turn things around against this softer group.
$20 Win 1 (Payout: $136.00)
$15 Win 7
$5 Exacta Box 1,7
Race 7: Claiming $25,000 at six furlongs on the turf for fillies and mares
6 – Sun and Moon
I was very interested in Sun and Moon (#6) getting on turf last time since she has the pedigree for it, but a fast pace took its toll. Now Sun and Moon turns back to a more appropriate distance and should be up close to what projects to be a moderate pace. Both of her efforts since being claimed back by Carlos Martin are better than they look on paper and I think she’s the horse to beat today.
$25 Win 6 (Payout: $98.75)
$4 Exacta Key Box 6 with 3,4,5,11 (Payout: $101.00)
Race 8: Claiming $25,000 at six furlongs on the turf
1 – Special Selection
Special Selection’s last race is worth watching, since he was bumped and blocked for much of the stretch drive. I know Special Selection’s recent form is a little all over the place, but he’s always been best in these one-turn turf sprints. If Special Selection (#1) is able to work out the right trip today, he looms a real threat in here, and the price should be generous.
$25 Win 1 (Payout: $245.00)
$4 Exacta Key Box 1 with 2,5,6 (Payout: $125.00)
Race 9: Maiden Claiming $40,000 at seven furlongs on the turf for NY-bred fillies and mares
12 – Animal Appeal
There’s a lot of guesswork to be done in the finale. I decided to take a shot with first time turfer Animal Appeal (#12). While there isn’t much turf pedigree on the dam’s side, Leroidesanimaux is a solid grass influence. It appears that this filly might have been claimed out of her debut with the notion of waiting to get her on turf in mind.
$10 Win/Place 12 (Payout: $33.50)
