Race 1: Claiming $40,000 at one mile for three year-olds
4 – Overthespeedlimit
While Jumpin Jac Flash is the horse to beat, I think Overthespeedlimit (#4) will be a viable alternative at a much better price. Overthespeedlimit didn’t run a fast final time last time, but that was completely due to him having to chase a frenetic early pace. Only La Verdad ran faster early fractions on that card. The pace totally collapsed and Overthespeedlimit did well to hang on for the victory.

Race 6: Claiming $35,000N3L at 1 1/16 miles on the turf
6 – Lead Singer
I suppose that Mutasaawy is the horse to beat, but he’s hard to trust given the lack of pace in this race. Arctic Slope had a trip last time, but he’s not the most consistent sort and may be overbet off that trouble with Castellano named to ride. I ended up going for Lead Singer (#6), who appears to be the most likely pacesetter. He too is inconsistent, but he’s also spent the majority of his career facing tougher fields than the one he meets today. At what should be a square price, I’m hoping he can wire the field.

Race 8: Allowance N1X at six furlongs on the turf for NY-bred fillies and mares
4 – Annie Walker
I’m very interested to see how Annie Walker (#4) runs off the claim by David Jacobson. At first I skipped right over this horse, but after taking a closer look, I think this might have been a very shrewd move by Jacobson. Annie Walker is a half-sister to Iron Power and there’s plenty of turf on both sides of her pedigree. She has run on turf before, but she was a total nutcase back then and I think you have to be somewhat forgiving of those races. I really think she deserves another chance on turf now that she’s learned to relax.

Race 9: Maiden Claiming $40,000 at seven furlongs on the turf for NY-bred fillies and mares
10 – Mini Muffin
Almost all of the more obvious contenders are coming off extended layoffs, which makes them somewhat difficult to trust. I may be reaching a bit, but I want to try Mini Muffin (#10) in her third start since the layoff. She actually ran some decent turf races here a year ago. Both of her turf sprints from last year are better than they look as she had subtle but not insignificant trouble each time.
