Race 3: Optional Claiming $75,000/N1X at six furlongs for NY-bred three year-old fillies
2 – Bar of Gold
I’m a fan of Bar of Gold (#2) and believe that she’s going to turn out to be a pretty nice filly. I know Kimmel’s layoff numbers don’t look great on the surface, but he actually does okay with young horses coming off layoffs. He’s been quoted as saying that he put a lot of work into Bar of Gold down in Florida and believes he has her ready to run today. I’ll be using over the obvious Sonora.
$30 Win 2 (Payout: $67.50)
$20 Exacta 2-3 (Payout: $68.00)
Race 7: Claiming $40,000 at six furlongs
1A – Sunny Puzzle
I like the pair of shrewd Gary Contessa claims and would actually pick either as an individual betting interest. Cosmo Storm (#1) ran better than the speed figure suggests last time, attacking a fast pace in a race that fell apart late. Sunny Puzzle (#1A) should be coming from further off the pace, but both of his sprint efforts are okay and make him a player here.
$15 Win 1
$5 Exacta Key Box 1 with 3,6
Race 8: Optional Claiming $62,500/N2X at one mile and 70 yards
8 – Son of a General
This is a very tricky race. Effinex may be the best horse, but I’m sure that this is allowance is not the ultimate goal for him. I wanted to pick Mr. Palmer, since he was racing on a deal rail last time, but the wet track worries me, since he may not care for them. It’s interesting that Coltimus Prime switches to the Clement barn, and while I like him racing on dirt, I think he could be overbet here. Given that there’s so much speed on paper, I wanted a closer and I’m going to take a shot with Son of a General (#8). He doesn’t have the upside of some others, but he’s been in good form, and his lone wet track win came over a sloppy, sealed track. I’m hoping for around 10/1.
