UPDATE: Live racing at Aqueduct was cancelled today.
I’m not totally sure that we will have racing today due to expected snowfall, but I’ll post some picks anyway. I’m not composing a full entry more because of time constraints than anything else. I also don’t feel that these picks require much more elaboration than what I’m going to give here.
Race 1: $10 Win 2
I’m assuming Pleasantfriday will scratch, but I would play against her even if she were running. Her last race was the product of an extremely inside-friendly track here on Wednesday. I’ll instead go to My Unbridled Storm (#2), who is the only other one with consistent dirt route experience.
Race 3: $25 Win 3
You can check out my reasons for adding Start It Up (#3) to my “Horses to Watch” list here. I think her first race was a lot better than it looks on paper and any sort of step forward should make her very tough for this field to handle. As long as her price doesn’t dip too low (we’re talking like 3-5), I’ll be making a big bet.
Race 6: $5 Exacta Box 1-3
The reasoning here is simple. Shy Humor (#1) and Discreet Code (#3) have been facing much tougher horses in Maiden Special Weight company than what what they meet today in this $20,000 claiming race. Shy Humor showed early in his career that he can handle dirt and has had excuses for his recent poor efforts over that surface. Discreet Code may have needed his return race. I’ll try to hook these two class droppers up in the exacta.
Race 7: $5 Exacta 2-4 // $5 Win 4
If Mordi’s Miracle (#2) breaks cleanly I don’t think he can lose this race. In adding him to my Alumni page following his impressive maiden victory as a “Horse to Watch,” I said that I think he is bound for stakes company and his connections seem to feel the same way. Yet Todd Pletcher did say in a Daily Racing Form article that he has major gate issues and it has been a constant struggle. There is plenty of other speed in this race, but I expect Mordi’s Miracle to run them into the ground early. This Hard Land (#4) is the type of long shot who should be able to pick up some pieces and he’s had plenty of success of the inner track in the past. I’ll use him under Mordi’s Miracle in the exacta and also play him to win just in case the favorite’s bad habits get the best of him.
