Many people will be handicapping this Wednesday Saratoga card trying to come up with a Pick 6 play. It looks like a very tough sequence, but I spot at least one single midway through the day.
Ampersand (#3) was any unlucky loser the last two times he ran, both at this level. Two back, he overcame a slow pace to just miss getting by Majestic Raffy, who came back to get it done versus open company last week. Then, last time, he just barely failed to run down Mia Poppy in a race where no one except Ampersand was able to mount any sort of significant late run. If he runs either of those two races or even his N1X allowance win three back, he will be very tough to beat. The only major obstacles here are Gimme Credit, who is trying to find some of the good form that carried him to three straight wins last summer, and So Scott, who is trying to transfer his good dirt form to turf. But I believe Ampersand is the horse that is in form and he should be very tough to hold off.
BEST BET OF THE DAY: $20 Win 3
Race 10: Claiming $20,000B at 1 1/8 miles
Big Creek and Dan and Sheila are the two horses that most people will probably be focusing their play around in this final leg of the Pick 6. They both figure off their best races, especially the latter of the two, but I’m going in a different direction. With a chance of rain later on in the day, I’m picking Springcourt (#4). Springcourt has run nine times on turf and synthetic surfaces and has never earned a Beyer of higher than 75. In two starts on dirt he has receieved Beyers of 80 and 77. Today, David Jacobson finally gets this horse back on what appears to be his preferred surface and it doesn’t hurt that he ran the best race of his life over this very track and distance last year. That day, he finished 13 lengths behind a breakout performance by Cease, but ran well enough to win this race. If he can move forward a few points off his recent turf races, he should be dangerous–and probably an overlay.
