Black N Beauty (#6) is entered in today’s eighth race, a $25,000 starter handicap at one mile. His main rival on paper looks to be morning line favorite Joan’s Choice (#4), who went on a tear over the inner track meet, falling just a nose short of being 3-for-3. Before that, he beat Black N Beauty when they were both entered in a similar spot back in November. However, both horses are much improved since then and the pace scenario today should work in both of their favors. I’ll also add that while it may seem like Black N Beauty’s form is in decline, keep in mind he got involved in a senseless pace duel last time, and would have run faster with a better ride.
True Heaven and Writingonthewall look to be the two main speeds and Joan’s Choice and Black N Beauty should be chasing them to the outside. Recent David Jacobson claim Saginaw also figures to be close up early and he loves this track and distance, however only his last race (for trainer Rick Dutrow, Jr.) would give him any shot in here. Before that he was off form and I question whether his big figure last time was due to him getting loose in a paceless affair. The only horse in the race I haven’t mentioned is Roman Invasion (#1), who seems a bit slower than these on paper, but has a closing style that fits this race well. I’ll use him with my top two selections. The bet:
$6 Win 6
$4 Exacta Box 4-6
$2 Exacta Box 4-6 with 1
