“Horse to Watch” Sky Colors (#6) is running in today’s third race at Aqueduct, a one mile NY-bred maiden special weight. As I mentioned when adding Sky Colors to the list, although he is a nine-race maiden, his last race was such a marked improvement from anything he had shown before that I just have to think he might be turning the corner. Remember that in his last start he survived a contentious pace and then fended off multiple challenges in the stretch to finish second behind a promising Mike Hushion colt. He earned a 73 Beyer in that race, 17 points higher than anything he had earned before. That seemed to be a stronger field than this one and I choose to believe it.
Now there is going to be a heavy favorite in this spot in the Chad Brown-trained The Thinker, who finished a closing third in his debut at 6 furlongs in which he earned a 56 Beyer figure. Chad Brown routinely improves his hoses second time out, but if Sky Colors runs his last race, The Thinker and all the rest need to step up their game. There is a chance Sky Colors could be third or even fourth choice in this spot, yet I think he’s the most likely winner. The bet:
